Creating and Choosing the Best Materials for Speaking and Pronunciation

An Intersection Panel of the Materials Writers and the Speech, Pronunciation and Listening Interest Sections (MWIS+SPLIS), with Steve Jones, Judy Gilbert, and Tamara Jones

Presented at the annual convention of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) March 21, 2013, in Dallas, Texas.

We presented a framework for deciding how to incorporate speaking and pronunciation topics into teaching and learning materials. The proposed framework is intended to help materials writers and teachers in designing or choosing effective materials. Which aspects of pronunciation are important for comprehensibility? Which can be taught and learned, and through which strategies?

Here is my contribution to the colloquium, with links to about 15 video clips demonstrating key concepts and other resources.

  1. Hi, I teach speaking in IELTS. I've been looking for new materials to teach speaking and pronunciation. The video links are good. I've bookmarked it for future use. Thumbs up for the great post!
